"Sunday Runway, Haute Dog . . . "

Greetings,

As many of you might remember - I had the great pleasure of participating in the "Haute Dog Fashion Show" a few weeks back - a charity event to raise money for Canine Companions for Independence. It's been a crazy few weeks since the event - but I wanted to share a little background . . . and some great images of the night . . .

1) First . . . we'll need a dog . . .

Me and Redford, the German Short-Haired Pointer . . . all ready for our close-up! Redford belongs to my good clients Joe and Stacy . . . and not only good clients - but, great friends as well!

2) Then, we'll need an inspiration for the outfit for the fashion show . . .

For the design of the actual outfit . . . I let Redford be my guide! Since his breed is a classic European hunting dog . . . something kinda outdoory was clearly going to be in order. A classic wool plaid would make up a large part of the design . . . with chocolate silk velvet trim and details.

And you have to love anyone, in this case my amazing upholsterer, who was delighted to help with the design - and we were able to construct this perfect German Hunting Jacket.

And everyone needs proper headgear . . . in Ralph Lauren "New Market Tweed" with leather trim.

3) We'll need a fitting . . .

Redford was such a good sport . . . this was the original fitting. Only a few weeks before the show.

4) Then all we'll need is a runway . . .

And here we go.

After walking the runway for the official show . . . we were asked to come back for a second viewing for the judges. Between our two visits to the runway, Redford had decided that he'd had enough of that damn hat. And there was NO changing his mind! If I'd been thinking - I'D have put it on . . . lol.

We were just one of over 70 dogs and owners in the show . . . here are a few other favourites from the night . . .

And this is Satchmo! And his owner is Paula West. And since we were organized back-stage by last name . . . Satchmo and Redford spent the entire evening playing . . . while we tried desperately to keep them from damaging their outfits . . . lol.

And the best part . . . the over 500 guests . . . all 'oooing' and 'ahhhhing' over all the dogs and raising money for such a great cause.

"A Kiss in the Snow . . . "

Greetings,

We interrupt our usual chatting about light fixtures and dog fashion shows . . . for some quick thoughts on last night's season finale of Downton Abbey. Well, it was the season finale here in the US . . . in England, they watched the second season last fall . . . and were treated to last night's 'episode' as a special on Christmas Day. And thank you to all my British friends who did not peep a single word about the plot. Blessings upon you all.

So . . . a few highlights of the evening for me. There's a parade of spoilers to follow . . . so, proceed at your own risk if you haven't seen the show yet . . .

1) The Pace. We've been cranking through plot and characters at break-neck (or better yet, back-breaking) speed this season. And I was growing nostalgic for the languid pace of the first season. My thought was that it was a editorial device (with the many new characters, the rapid changes of fate, the large breaks in the timeline) . . . commenting on how quickly life was changing during the First World War. And for that reason alone . . . I understood the new pace. I didn't say I liked it . . . but, I could see a point for it. But last night, we seemed to return to a pre-war rhythm. And though the episode was packed with plot . . . it didn't feel as hurried.

2) The Continuity Fairy. Firstly, I love the Continuity Fairy. And she is missing from a great many television shows. She just stops in every once in a while and says, "Remember that thing that happened? Well, I do . . . and here is some of the fall-out from events that took place in previous episodes." So, it was a great delight to see Sir Anthony Strallan re-appear in Edith's life.

3) The Bomb. Okay y'all. I seriously jumped off the sofa when Lord Grantham asked Mary if the only reason she was marrying was to keep the secret of the death of Mr. Pamuk! And the shock was almost palpable. There was a point about mid-season this year . . . when I was trying to figure out who did . . . and who DID NOT . . . know the story of the "Turkish gentlemen." But, after two complete seasons of keeping the awful truth from her father . . . it was SO satisfying to finally hear it spoken of. The worrisome part is that Bates is now in prison for life . . . just for trying to keep that very same secret from being revealed.

4) The Kiss. It's been a slow burn. I don't think since we all waited and watched outside a rainy coffee shop for Ross and Rachel to admit to the feelings that they shared . . . has there been such a joyous and perfectly pitch declaration of love . . . as an (at times icy) Mary . . . and the (at times stoic) Matthew . . . in a swirl of snow . . . illuminated by the warmth of the Abbey . . . finally, seriously finally, expressing their true feelings. Good stuff. And seriously, if the fine people at the BBC aren't selling "Downton Abbey Snow Globes" they're missing a HUGE opportunity.

5) The Dog. I don't care which character is killed, or crippled, or maimed, or executed, or miscarries . . . don't y'all DARE hurt that dog. Seriously. No, I mean it.

6) The Dowager. It always kinda worries me when a character becomes the "comic relief." So often they become over-used . . . and lose their potency. Not so with the delicious Maggie Smith! And with her three word line, "Do you promise?" last night . . . I will be the first the start the campaign to build a national shrine to the aforementioned Maggie.

"Can't Wait 'til Sunday . . . "

I know we usually cover the fashion world on the weekends . . . but, with Fashion Week blazing forth each day this week - I thought I'd get a jump on things and post a bit of my favourite show.

As regular readers of the blog will already know - Michael Bastian just always sets my fashion senses a-tingle. A clever mix of classic, wearable menswear - but, with a modern, clever fit - and beautiful styling. Michael and I have been friends since the 'olden days' - when we were both at Ralph Lauren together - and I've watched with great pride as his star has completely taken off.

Greetings,

Remember when you first fell in love. Sometimes it's just a crystal clear moment of seeing someone across a bustling room. At a restaurant. At a bar. At someone's holiday party. Eyes locking onto each other. The rest of the world . . . melting away. Silence.

With Valentine's Day fast approaching . . . I've been thinking about love these last few days. And the things that make love last. The little things. Like the way my heart begins to race a little bit when we see each other across a room.

Like we did the first time we met in a crowded restaurant. Making sure that my shirt was tucked in properly. Glancing in a mirror to make sure my hair looked right. And then looking up - across the room - and 'wow.' I think one of the keys to keeping a relationship bright and vibrant is remembering 'that look.' And the way it made you tingle. Keeping a close connection to that first spark of love.

And keeping this idea in mind, let's talk about our homes. Remember when you first moved in? Walking through those empty, echoing rooms? Your imagination spinning with ideas. Making plans. Mentally playing with paint colours. Putting down newspaper to represent the layout of the furniture. Imagining all the parties. The Sunday mornings reading the paper on the sofa. A cup of tea before bedtime.

I hope we're able to 'keep that love alive' when we're talking about our homes as well. Maybe we could even set an arbitrary date on the calendar when we celebrate the love we have for the space we live in. Because we all know that you and the house have fights at times. I've been know to go to bed - angry with my bedroom. So, though it may not be perfect (few relationships are!) - let's remember to love our homes. Keeping that first spark of romance alive.

So take a good look at your house. Tell it that you love it. Buy it some flowers every now and then to let it know. And seriously, what house out there doesn't like to get a new set of window treatments every now and then . . .

Trust me. When you look lovingly at your house . . . it will return both your gaze and your affection.

I'm excited to announce that I'll be speaking as part of an exciting panel on Friday morning (February 3rd) at the Design San Francisco's keynote presentation called "Go Social - Using Social Media to Generate Business." The lively panel discussion will include Grant Gibson, Melanie Coddington, and myself - and will be led by Michela O'Conno Abrams (President at Dwell Media).

"Walking the Dog . . . "

"Um . . . . no, I don't. But, I have access to an amazing dog, Redford. What do you need?"

"We're having a Dog Fashion Show here at the Design Center to raise money for The Canine Companions for Independence in February. You just need to design an outfit for Redford, using textiles from the design center, and then take part in the show. Interested?"

"Hmmmmm. What should I design for the show? Well, I spend so much of my time with Redford and Joe trail running every weekend . . . so, something outdoorsy could be good"

"Maybe even something with a hunting motif. Redford is after all a hunting breed"

At the Kravet Showroom in SF with showroom manager, Lisa Davis.

"Sure. What are they looking for?"

"Well, I know you've been shopping at Kravet for the fabrics for the outfit. Could they get some film of you shopping . . . ?"

"Sure!"

(A week or so later, the telephone rings . . . )

"Good afternoon, this is Scot."

"Hey Scot. I'm from the Discovery Channel - we'll plan to be in SF next week . . . could we also take some time and get on on-camera interview with you . . . ?

"Absolutely. We could even set up at the office for the interview. Would that work for you?"

Winter sets in. The sun sets early every afternoon. And as we travel through the darkest days of the year, there is little more romantic and delightful than a gathering of friends around a dinner table - illuminated by candlelight. The flickering light gives any gathering an instant intimacy. Half-lit faces filled with laughter. Eyes sparkling in the reflected glow. An evening of memories about to begin.

I've always said - If you're worried about the success of any dinner party . . . just turn off a few more lights . . . and light a few more candles. The magic will surely follow.

I also have a little suggestion if you're a regular votive user. I've filled my votive holders with about an inch of water before placing the candles in. That way, the melting wax just gathers in the water, the at the end of the evening - after throwing the candles and water away - your votives are clean and ready to be used again.

I can only imagine the vast number of you who have been burning through your DVD of the first season of Downton Abbey in the last few days . . . Because season two in premiering on Sunday night. I know we've been working through season 1 over the last few days - just immersing ourselves in the beautiful language, great sets and costumes, and the delicious storyline that IS Downton Abbey.

How will the outbreak of the 1st World War effect all of the characters? Will Matthew and Mary ever be together again? What will happen to Thomas? Will Edith get the just rewards for her actions? And most importantly - what will the Dowager say next?!?!!?

Tune in on Sunday night to your local PBS station and find out. And if you haven't been watching . . . I highly recommend it . . .

I hope everyone had an amazing new year's celebration. We were up in Lake Tahoe for a few days enjoying the beautiful scenery (but, lacking any form of snowfall this year . . . yikes!). But, now - safely tucked back into the office - and making plans for a great 2012.

The new year is a great time to make some updates to the house. With all the holiday decorations coming down - it's easy to see the house with a fresh eye and with a new perspective . . . and as I noted on facebook the other day - "The removal of the 90 odd feet of garland from the drawing room REALLY kinda opens the space up!"

But with the front rooms done - this weekend - I think I'm gonna tackle some updates on my bathroom. Maybe rehang a few pieces of artwork. An inventory of the medicine cabinet. And it's always a good time to order fresh set of new monogrammed towels.

"Top Hats. And Trees . . . "

Greetings,

I've had the last few days - most likely like you - with precious little to do. Been in the office a bit. Catching up with friends. And reflecting on the holiday that has just passed.

I'm always fascinated with the build up to any holiday. And the inevitable aftermath. We seem to absolutely submerge ourselves in Christmas carols and shopping. Decorating and cooking. Mailing cards and hosting parties. But, usually by around noon on Christmas day - it's over. And it all immediately looks dated. Wrapping debris everywhere - and piles of dirty dishes in the sink.

I've discovered a theme in the images that I had been collecting for the last few weeks. Sometimes when I open one of my image folders - I see thoughts and ideas that I had never planning on. Images of a holiday - that can stretch beyond the 26th of December. Kind of a late December palate cleanser. An etude in black and white. A time of the longest night. But, the beginning of longer brighter days. Years ending. Years beginning.

A bracing sorbet for those of us who are visually stimulated . . .

"A Holiday in Pictures . . . "

Everyone has been so kind with their response to the video from my home this holiday season - I thought I would take a bit of time and share the background on some of my belongings and the decorations . . .

The garland. The garland. Yes, there is 80 feet of garland in the drawing room. And it makes the room totally 'magical' . . . a word that I love to use when describing my house for the holidays. The garland itself is made from fresh magnolia leaves, cedar, douglas fir, eucalyptus, and stripped dogwood branches.

My drawing room also contains a large portion of my artwork. In fact, I've hung most all of my portraiture in the room. A collection of black & white and colour photography, etchings, and oil painting from numerous periods all mix together . . . from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

My bar - with some vintage Arthur Court Stag Head DOF cocktail glasses . . . and my monogrammed cocktail napkins from SFERRA.

The antique military uniform is a new addition to the house. And I love how well it pairs with the oil portrait on the table behind my sofa. And of course, stacks of art books, and remembrances are everywhere. In fact, the b/w images of the bartender is a picture that I took myself - at the opening party for the San Francisco Polo store in 1996. Several people have inquired about the tartan clock in the drawing room . . . and it's actually a piece from Ralph Lauren from the early 1990's. The china pattern is called "Clarendon" and it also came in chargers and serving pieces.

And we don't need to get too deep into the details of my shoe fetish. Shamefully, this is only a small portion of them . . . lol . . . but, I love the way the colours work with the rug in my bedroom.

If you recall the holiday photo shoot for Rue Magazine last year (you can see a video here) - this is the space that used to be my dining room. Now, after several years as a study or dining room - it's back to serving its original purpose as my bedroom. And, yes, there is something madly magical about sleeping in a room filled with Christmas trees. I highly recommend it.

Since there is so much artwork hanging in other parts of my home - I love the simplicity of just the few pieces that hang in my bedroom. And the 90 odd yards of marine blue taffeta tenting the room create the most wondrous space to sleep in. The leather and tartan headboard is a custom piece that I designed last year.

Opposite the bed, you might recognize the antique chairs upholstered in Diamond and Baratta's "London Plaid" -as they were a big part of the photo shoot at the house last year . . . and now these two chairs rest underneath another of the over-sized theatrical backdrops that I had framed for the house.

And for the tree this year . . . especially after last year's tree had been so bright and metallic . . . I wanted something really organic and natural. So this year's tree is filled with apples, pears, and lemons - with little woodland creatures and bird's nests throughout the branches. I also filled the interior of the tree with dogwood branches, bleached eucalyptus, dried gourd and mushrooms.

"The Envelope Please . . . "

Well y'all . . . it's been another great year of our annual Holiday Decorating Contest. All combined, we had over 200 entries from all over the country - and a few from around the world. It has honestly been one of the best parts of my day - seeing everyones creativity - and sensing the great joy that you all take in celebrating the holiday season with great style.

But you've not stopped by today to listen to me prattle on . . . you've all come to see who our winners are. But firstly - let me thank our judging panel. I think we all know what a difficult job it was to determine a winner. So a big tartan 'thank you' to : Grant Gibson, Megan Arquette, Tobi Fairley, Ronda Carman, Michael Devine, and Kathryn Greeley.

Even though it's kind of an awards show - I decided not to make you suffer through any opening dance number by the "SMW Design Dancers" . . . so let's just get right to the announcements . . .

"New York Holiday House 2011 . . . "

One of my favourite afternoon's in New York last weekend was a visit to Traditional Home's Holiday House - located at #2 East 63rd Street just off Central Park.

"Holiday House, the designer table top showhouse was founded three years ago by Iris Dankner to benefit the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure^®. Iris is a thirteen year breast cancer survivor and a former executive member of the Board of Directors of Komen Greater NYC, where she served for six years. From 2005 to 2009, she also chaired the annual Komen New York City Race for the Cure^® held each September in Central Park."

And, right from the very beginning - I was completely blown away by the entrance to the home - a subtle melange of colours and textures from the talented team at Bradley/Theirgartner Design. Lush velvets and tapestries. Glazed fruits and magnolia leaves. Classic style and modern details.

"Holiday Decorating Contest - The Judges . . . "

I hope y'all are as excited as I am about this year's Holiday Decorating Contest! We had such a great time last time - and I can't wait to see what everyone has been up to in their houses this year. But, what's a contest without a panel of celebrity judges - so, without further ado - let me introduce . . .

Tobi Fairley

Tobi Fairley, founder and owner of Tobi Fairley Interior Design, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, has a bold, modern sense of colour and style. Featured last year on the cover of the "blue issue" of House Beautiful, Tobi is also a highly recognized blogger and (because I've heard her - a very inspirational) public speaker. Tobi brings a dash of Southern hospitality to our panel.

Grant K. Gibson

Grant Gibson, my fellow San Francisco interior designer, was named by Elle Decor Magazine in 2010 as "Five Designers to Watch" - and has built an incredible following around the country. Grant brings his classic lines and particularly European sense of style to our collection of judges.

Kathryn Greeley

Known for her gracious entertaining and expert knowledge of tabletop collections, Kathryn Greeley was primed to create her first book, which garnered national media coverage on the radio and in print. The Collected Tabletop's notable features include Texas Home & Living, Carolina Home & Garden, SAVORNC, and the Martha Stewart Living Radio show.

Ronda Rice Carman

A Texan. Living in Scotland. Ronda brings a worldly perspective to our group. Originally best known for her noted blog, All The Best - Ronda is now one of the important voices commenting on interior design. Besides the work on her blog, she is also writing for the Huffington Post, The New York Social Dairy, and her first book is being published by Rizzoli in early 2013.

Megan Arquette

Megan's amazing blog, Beach Bungalow 8, has been an inspiration of mine for years. I have always loved her beachy, bohemian style . . . and I know she'll definitely bring a perfectly 'coastal' vibe to our panel. Megan also holds the distinction of being the first blogger that I met in person after I began writing myself. We still laugh about the four and a half hour breakfast we spent together . . . laughing and getting to know each other.

Michael Devine

After spending years in the magazine world, Michael began his own custom textile business in 2006. His fabrics have been featured in numerous shelter magazines and in showcase homes around the country. As well as his bustling fabric and accessory business, he is an avid and noted gardener - I'm curious to have his reactions to all those trees and garlands y'all are busily making.

"Holiday Decorating Contest . . . "

Well, the holiday season is finally here again! And since we had SO much fun last year - sharing images of our homes all decorated for the holidays - let's do it again. For those of you who have been long-time readers, you'll know how MUCH I love decorating for the holidays. The smell of fresh cedar. The feel of pine sap on my fingers. Maybe some holiday music on the stereo.

Don't fret - you'll get to see what I've been doing at the house this year - but, I really want to see what y'all have been up to . . . So, I'm pleased to announce the second annual" Tartanscot Holiday Decorating Contest! "

There are three categories that you can enter :

1) Christmas Tree ( lights. ornaments. creativity. )

2) Dining Room ( it's one of the best times of the year to entertain. Let's see that dining table! )

3) Fireplace Mantel. ( let your imagination sparkle! )

How to do it:

1) Decorate your home.

2) Take digital photos.

3) Email your images (along with your name and address) to "HolidayContest@SMWDesign.com"

But, don't think it will just be me here - throwing darts at the wall to see who's going to win. Tune in later this week to meet our panel of Celebrity Judges - a collection of designers and bloggers from around the world.

And it's not just for bragging rights - images of the winning entries will be posted here on Tartanscot during Christmas week - and I'll also be announcing our special prizes for the contest later in the week.

After 20 or 30 minutes of chatting, touring the showroom, and getting everyone seated and ready - Off we went . . . traveling through from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve in record time.

First, we worked to plan the perfect guest list.

With a couple of good giggles along the way. Nothing makes a better evening than some good ole laughter!

Then Pat McIntosh (of Lulalina) shared her insights and inspirations for making customized invitations.

Then some tips for getting the house ready - as I fashioned a Thanksgiving wreath using one of those sad, plastic wreath-forms as its base.

Success. All the while trying to keep everyone entertained.

And finally, back to me - sharing my thoughts for creating an exciting menu for your next cocktail party.

It's always one of my favourite social events each October - the Opening Gala of the San Francisco Fall Antique Show. And it's a perennial favourite for the myriad of reasons . . .

1) Great friends. It never fails. I always run into Jennifer Boles (The Peak of Chic) and Emily Eerdmans every year . . . and this year, I finally had a chance to meet Penelope Bianchi!

2) The Space is always amazing. For those of you not familiar with San Francisco, the Gala is held at Fort Mason Center . . . which is basically a giant warehouse space in the Marina . . . but, each year - it's transmogrified into something glorious . . .

3) Great food (more on that further down . . . ). and Great drinks.

And - for the second year in a row . . . it happened. After running into Grant Gibson, Jennifer Boles, Diane Dorrans Saeks, and Eric Cohler right by the front door . . . my first questions was, "Are they serving Tater-Tots again this year?!?!?!?"

Blessedly, the answer was YES!
